The women who work in the factory are not laborers- not anymore. They are ChangeMakers and they are at the heart of a larger community health outreach. They work in their communities to change menstrual hygiene practices and remove the stigma and shame that surrounds this subject. They are educators, counselors, and mentors.
Currently adolescent girls miss over 30 days of school a year due to period poverty. Globally over 500 million women have challenges accessing pads. In Kenya, 9 million women and adolescent girls struggle to manage this essential, monthly, completely natural event.
Over the next three years our goal is to make pads accessible for 500,000 women by investing in this social enterprise. They will be able to manage their periods with agency and dignity. After three years of guidance, training in essential business management tools, and financial support, we will turn over the keys to our ChangeMakers. They will own and operate the Mbita enterprise. From there we will expand across Kenya and Eastern Africa to meet the needs of all women.
